This Week in Georgia History:
On March 7,1979:
Ray Charles performed “Georgia On My Mind” to a joint session of the Georgia General Assembly in honor of the legislation naming it Georgia’s official song.
The song, written in 1930, paid honor to the songwriter’s sister, Georgia. However, the ambiguous lyrics allowed the state to adopt the song as its own.
The song’s lyrics appear in O.C.G.A. § 50-3-60.
